Chocolatey4automate vs. Chocolatey4Labtech

Post by mwilhelmi »

Hi,

we use Chocolatey4Labtech and I remember there was a reason not to user Chocolatey4automate.
What´s the difference between both plugins?

And does Chocolatey4automate support adding packages to clients on base of groups or searches?

Chocolatey for Automate 3.5 was a rewrite of Chocolatey 3.0 and Habitat's Application Manager combined together.

Chocolatey.org over the years has been moving to a commercial model promoting business and MSP style licensing and to help push this they have put in place restrictions in the form of throttles and blocker that slow the use of the community access points to the repo. A single house hold can operate easy enough but more than a couple of pc's at any one IP address and you will trigger these features of the repo.

So in both Habitat and Chocolatey 3.5 we have introduced new functionality that allows you to have each location or public IP address speak with one voice. This allows the location the full power of daily , weekly or monthly updates for all Windows agents without out the limitations of the repo.

Chocolatey for Labtech does not have this feature and so in the end will have its locations show odd behavior as throttles and blocks go up to prevent mass updates and installs.

Chocolatey for Labtech was awesome at what it did when it did it but time I believe is pushing Chocolatey for Labtech to end of life.

The only way to successfully operate today is with Habitat or Chocolatey 4 Automate 3.5. App Genie if you just want a app updater. It's less traffic and is less affected by throttles but may still be trapped up in large locations.
