Habitat WiFi Location Scanner

Post by Cubert »

The new Habitat WiFi Location Scanner

Description:

The Habitat Wifi Location Scanner retrieves from Wifi enabled agents a current list of seen Wifi devices on the networks being accessed. It is an automated service that has a control in the Habitat automated services manager and it executes every hour keeping track of when the device was first seen and when it was last detected and weather or not the device is actively online (pingable).

Device names maybe blank if they do not broadcast a name. However they will broadcast a net adapter company name which helps to identify the type of devices.
  • Amazon Technologies Inc. = Alexa Audio Device
  • Nintendo Co. ,Ltd = Nintendo game system
  • Google, Inc. = Google Audio Device
  • Roku Inc. = RoKu TV devices
Then you will have Router and network devices along with any other PC or cell phone user listing here.

This view will allow you to identify what networks an agent is able to see. compare that with another agent at the same location to determine signal strength across the clients location. This is really cool when you have a client location that utilizes multiple access points providing you with a better picture of radio coverages. We also added a manual scan button along with the ability to disable the automated scans. This gives you the preference to get hourly updates or to only run when you need it, or both. Each agent that has Wifi will contribute to the Network Access Point view expanding the visibility on this tool.

Sometimes your picture is incomplete. Here is an example of that in Automate.

You are looking at an active Client location with what appears to be zero network devices shown in Automate.

-But:

When you look at Habitat's new Wifi tool you see, well a whole lot of stuff sitting out there on the network. I would even go as far as calling them "Network Devices" (sarcastically) :)

Added new feature to WiFi scanner in build 1.0.0.71

We added a "Disable Scanner" at the location level which will do several things.
  • Will remove the current list of devices from view
  • Will prevent any future scanning of agents under this location
  • If previous data exists for location will remove data from database on next scan cycle.
We also tweaked the Locations tab so it only shows up if there is at least one agent with WIFI adapter. If the location only houses non WIFI agents then this Tab will no longer be present in location console.

So if you go to a location and this tab does not exist then you do not report any WIFI agents in that location.
